Joy, delight, contentment, pleasure, good fortune, enjoying life: What is happiness, really? What is this thing that people seek out and often have a hard time finding? We all want to be happy. It’s no wonder that we see scores of Pinterest posts, Huff Post articles, and coaches promoting the thought of being happy, but what is it?

Happiness is a multi-layered state of being, like a delicious cake that has plenty of delightful parts, but which altogether makes for a really fantastic final product.

In many ways, happiness is the combination of everyday joyful experiences, our true desires and beliefs – not the ones of our parents, friends, co-workers, or society tell us we should want and believe – our identify, individual patterns in life, and overall satisfaction.
