Self-Care for Your Chakras

Self-care is multi-dimensional and it includes being in touch with your body. I think we can all agree there is energy that runs through the body. Some people believe that this energy is concentrated in the chakras, or energy centers, that run along the spine in the center of the body. Even for those who are a little iffy on the chakra system – I was one of those people! – breaking the body up into segments to focus on self-care is something that we can all get behind.


Below, I highlight multiple ways to support these energy centers in your body, from yoga poses (I’m not a yoga teacher, but I practice it from time to time), to meditation focuses, essential oils, foods, and more! Let’s get to loving on those chakras!

ROOT CHAKRA
Sanskrit Name: Muladhara
Color: Red
Location: Base of Spine

Our root chakra is our connection with the earth. It’s where our sense of grounding and safety originates. When your root chakra is balanced, you’ll feel a sense of security and belonging. You’ll also be in a better place to help others through their journey.

Yoga Pose: Vrksasana – Tree Pose
Chant: LAM
Food: carrots, strawberries, chili peppers, spinach, garlic, beets, tomatoes, and other red fruit

Meditation Suggestion: Imagine being rooted to the earth. Focus on grounding meditations and that physical connection with gravity. 

Affirmations: I am safe. I am supported. I am grounded. I am root. 

Oils: frankincense, ginger, cedarwood, patchouli, sandalwood, peppermint

SACRAL CHAKRA
Sanskrit Name: Svadhishthana
Color: Orange
Location: Lower Abdomen/2 Inches Below Navel

The sacral chakra is linked with our reproductive power and – on a more metaphorical level – our creativity in life. When the chakra is balanced, you feel open and free to open up to others in a healthy way – meaning you do it with self-control. You’re also more able to deal with change when it comes up. 

Yoga Pose: Deviasana – Goddess Pose
Chant: VAM
Food: mango, nuts, chocolate, pumpkin, papaya, oranges, and other orange food

Meditation Suggestion: Tune into the lower abdomen and imagine an orange spinning light there. Imagine opening up to others in a safe, healthy way.

Affirmations: I am creative. I am sexy. I am fertile. I am in control of my impulses

Oils: coriander, clary sage, rose, geranium, ylang ylang, tangerine, myrrh


SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA
Sanskrit Name: Manipura
Color: Yellow
Location: Upper Abdomen


Our solar plexus (third) chakra is the center of our sense of self & our perception of who we are. When it’s balanced, you feel a sense of inner harmony. Your self-esteem is on point! You feel confident, even in moments of spontaneity. A healthy solar plexus chakra means you’ll be able to stand up for yourself without having to prove yourself to others.

Yoga Pose: Navasana – Boat Pose
Chant: RAM
Food: whole grains, kefir, yellow peppers, pineapple, cheese, yogurt, and other yellow foods

Meditation Suggestion: Focus on your personal power, expressing it effectively, and boosting your self-esteem. It may be helpful to imagine a yellow spinning light in your abdomen.

Affirmations: I am powerful. I am growing. I am strong. I am balanced.

Oils: rosemary, cedarwood, fennel, ginger, valerian


HEART CHAKRA
Sanskrit Name: Anahata
Color: Green
Location: Center of Chest over Sternum


The heart chakra is where our love for others resides. It makes sense! A balanced heart chakra will enable you to give to others without giving too much. You’ll feel compassion, empathy, and love.

Yoga Pose: Ustrasana – Camel Pose
Chant: YAM
Food: broccoli, kale, lettuce, green beans, brown rice, and green food

Meditation Suggestion: Loving-Kindness meditations are wonderful for the heart chakra!

Affirmations: I love myself. I am courageous. I feel others struggles but they are not mine.

Oils: bergamot, frankincense, lavender, rose, sage, sandalwood


THROAT CHAKRA
Sanskrit Name: Vishuddha
Color: Blue/Turquoise
Location: Hollow of the Throat between Collar Bones

Your physical and spiritual voice center is your throat chakra. When you feel like you haven’t been heard or that others don’t value what you have to say, this chakra can become unbalanced. When it’s in good shape, though, you can speak your mind and heart without hesitation – generally speaking – and you feel good communicating with others.

Yoga Pose: Salamba Sarvangasana – Supported Shoulder-stand
Chant: HAM
Food: blueberries, mushrooms, kelp, herbal teas, blackberries, dragon fruit

Meditation Suggestion: Imagine speaking to someone clearly and intelligibly. Imagine a scenario in which you are validated for your feelings and thoughts.

Affirmations: I am learning. I am progressing. I am filled with wisdom. I speak clearly and effectively.

Oils: geranium, sandalwood, spearmint, chamomile, frankincense

THIRD EYE CHAKRA
Sanskrit Name: Ajna
Color: Indigo
Location: Forehead between the Eyes


Located in the center of your forehead, the third eye chakra is the center of your inner wisdom. When it’s balanced, you’re sure of your purpose in the greater scheme of things. Trust and practice your intuition – this is where it lives.

Yoga Pose: Sukhasana – Easy Pose
Chant: AUM (OM)
Food: grapes, plums, purple carrots, prunes, eggplant, and other purple foods

Meditation Suggestion: Focus on the point in the center of your forehead and imagine opening to all the good in the universe.

Affirmations: I am wise. I trust myself. I am intuitive. I am a good decision maker.

Oils: juniper, palo santo, rose, cedarwood, frankincense, peppermint


CROWN CHAKRA
Sanskrit Name: Sahasrara
Color: Purple
Location: Top of Head


When you’re feeling especially spiritual and connected with a higher power – be it God, Allah, the Universe, Spirit, or anything else – your crown chakra is balanced and open. If you feel yourself slipping too far into the spiritual practices and rituals in your life, check in with this chakra and see how you can support it in a healthy way. Remember, balance and harmony in everything is the goal! It’s just as bad to be too in your head and spirit as it is to be too absorbed in your body.

Yoga Pose: Savasana – Corpse Pose
Chant: OM or AH
Food: drink plenty of water

Meditation Suggestion: Imagine a vessel over your head – make it a specific shape, color, and material. Imagine allowing good from God, the Universe, etc. to filter into the top of your head, connecting you with the spirit realm beyond you.

Affirmations: I am divine. I am filled with the divine. I am greatness.

Oils: basil, sandalwood, lavender, myrrh, frankincense, rose
